I have suffered from Chronic Typhoid for 7
months. As time passed by, I found it increasingly difficult to manage my
illness and the resulting weakness from Typhoid. I started believing that I
would have to deal with this reduced stamina and depressed state of mind all my
life, as I had seen some of the sufferers from around the world commenting on
medical sites about their struggle to fight Typhoid for years, and even
decades. Then I came across some amazing home remedies to fight against the
disease and tricks to control my delirious mind that helped me immensely to
recover. Along the way, I’ve made some greats friends from all over the world
that have suffered from the same flavor of typhoid and have come out
winners. I’m writing this blog for all those who have come down with long
running Typhoid caused by the dreaded Salmonella Typhi and are finding it hard
to cope with the situation. The biggest problem is that no doctor says the
illness could be long running – it’s always said to be a 21-day illness, divided
into 3 phases, at the end of which one is said to be completely cured. But, to
us, it’s this never-ending weakness, lethargy, diarrhea that makes life
miserable as it renders one useless for any sort of activity – at home or at
work. When I searched for online content about Typhoid, NOT ONE webpage talked
about long running Typhoid. However, there were hundreds of people complaining
about the perpetual weakness they inherited and how the feeling of “being
normal” had been long lost, in some cases for decades!
In this blog, to begin with, I will talk about Typhoid in general,
what causes it, symptoms, treatments etc. Later, I will share my experience
about long running typhoid and all the learnings I’ve had talking to people
across the world who’ve been in the same boat. For those of you that don’t like
reading long stories, the miracle remedies
are - Neem leaves (Azadirachta
Indica), Honey & Cinnamon and Yoga Pranayam (Anulom Vilom, Surya
Namaskar).
My Story - from onset of Typhoid to complete recovery
I had delivered my second son in end of January 2014. I suffered UTI and diarrhea 7 days after the delivery. I was admitted and treated for UTI and the diarrhea went away in a month’s time. Everything was going well for 3 months. Then I decided to start exercising. In June, I went back to work and it was very hectic at work. Then I started dieting in the month of July and August. By September I was losing weight, even on weeks I was not exercising. I went down from 60 to 51 in a month. But I was feeling fit as ever. Folks in the family asked me to visit the doctor, I instead got my thyroid checked and it was normal (I take 25mg and 50 mg Thyronom alternate days).
Then one day, I had a lot work in office and was feeling exhausted (we all have those days, don’t we?) and came down with a sore throat and fever by 5 PM in the evening. The fever started with 99 Fahrenheit, 100 & went up to 103 Fahrenheit. Paracetomol (Crocin) just didn’t help and sponging with tap water also did not help. Later I was told that I should have used ice water for sponging, which my husband had insisted was the right way from the beginning, but husbands are never right, right! ;)
The fever remained for the next whole day and subsided the day after. I resumed work and that week went by fine. Then one day, while sitting on a chair, I realized that I had lost all the cushion in my bottom, the bones in my buttocks were hurting as they were pressing against the hard surface of the chair. This was like a fire alarm – what was happening?? I planned to visit a doctor in internal medicine (amazing lady!). She initially wondered if it was TB but examined me thoroughly. She touched my tummy and realized there was tenderness all over. Since I didn’t get loose motions yet, she was not sure if it was really stomach related. She asked me to get a CBP, Widal and ESR done. The results came a day later and whoa! it was Typhoid. The titers were as follows
S. TYPHI O Antigen: 1:80
S. TYPHI H ANTIGEN: 1:160
S. PARATYPHI AH: <1:80
S. PARATYPHI BH: 1:80
ESR: 35
Now, there was good feeling about the whole situation and I was enjoying it – why? Because this lovely typhoid had given me a sleeker body, love and care from all the dear ones at NO COST. I was feeling fit and fine as ever, no fever, nothing. Given how I was feeling and the fact that the Widal was not insanely high, the doctor just asked me to take rest and have probiotics and controlled diet (more about this in the Diet in Typhoid section). She didn’t start me on any antibiotics. She also asked me to visit her a week later. I continued with work and saw her a week later, only to discover that I had lost another kg. She was worried with the weight loss and put me antibiotic treatment for a month (Ciprofloxin 100 mg, twice a day, for 3 weeks). I was still feeling fine and energy levels were high, so even though she recommended bed rest for 2 weeks, I continued working. Meanwhile, I had another bout of fever (similar to the kind I had earlier), only this time it was accompanied by severe diarrhea and nausea. The fever, like before, started in the evening, around 5 and lasted the whole of next day, this time too, it didn't go down with an sort of antipyretic (One BIG Learning - If you can't get a fever down with antipyretics, it is likely a bacterial infection. The fever I experienced during the UTI episode was also associated with ECOLI and antipyretics didn't help there too). The fever came down the following day. I visited the doctor again and she checked my BP was down to 90/55. I was given symptomatic treatment immediately– IV electrolyte replacement (to provide electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium and chloride ions, lost through vomiting and diarrhea) and rehydration. The BP was up to 110/70 after the IV was administered. The same IV followed the next day. Though the BP was controlled, I didn't feel good. This marked the onset of Typhoid for me as I kept getting weaker and weaker from here on. There was no fever, no vomiting, but I would feel weak all day, head would hurt once in a while, eyes were always heavy and hurting , started losing hair, diarrhea all the time. This continued for 3-4 months and I took another course of Ciprofloxin, this time 400 mg, two times a day (4 times as strong as the last dose) for 4 weeks. I didn’t have the fever always, instead it would set it when I exerted myself physically or mentally. So I came to realize I needed break from work. I took Leave of Absence in February 2015 and researched my way to recovery. Here I am, writing this blog in March, feeling great, as never before. The reports still indicate slight infection in the body, though all the associated weakness and other symptoms are all gone.
Weight loss in Typhoid - I lost 12 Kgs in 2 months!!
Risk Factors - Where did I pick up
Typhoid and why only me?
I highly doubt that the panipuri (popular
street food in India) I had at the road side to have caused the illness. I am
not the only one, “all” the people I met at the hospital, and a few
from India that I got in touch with online indicated that they often partied on
the roadside panipuri. Now if that be true, one may wonder why some
continue to have street food and never come down with Typhoid? I was
accompanied by my mother when I had panipuri, why did she not get it? I’ve
spent the most of the 7 months I’ve suffered thinking about it. No online
content gave me that answer, so I went ahead studying people you have suffered
from typhoid, TB, Dengue, Malaria and similar deadly diseases. And I really
didn’t have to struggle getting the answer – these people had low immunity and
were clinically weaker when they caught the illness. In my case, I
had come out of child birth, was nursing my little one, had resumed work and
made the mistake of dieting & exercising, in hope to get back to pre-pregnancy shape. I tell you, Mommies, we shouldn't do that.
Other likely risk factors for Typhoid are:
1. Immunosuppression due to diabetes -
As we are aware, diabetes increases the blood sugar levels and impacts body's
ability to fight diseases. I came across two ladies that were suffering from
chronic Typhoid for years (with Widal as high as 640!!) and both were diabetic.
As with any disease, it's very important to control Diabetes to stay away from
Typhoid.
2. Reduction in stomach acidity
increases the chances that Salmonella Typhi gets the right, acid free
environment to thrive in the stomach long enough to bring one down with
Typhoid. Popping antacid pills is therefore not recommended. I had issues
with digestion post-delivery and would regularly take antacid tablets to settle
the acidity. Later I learnt how Cinnamon and Honey mix helps a great deal with
acidity but that was after I had picked up the disease (More about
Cinnamon and Honey in a later section).

DeleteA very gripping article on a war against Typhoid. Very Good Neha. You have put up all details, in spite of the suffering you have gone through. The article is lucid. It is likely to motivate and inspire all, suffering from Typhoid. Alternate healing methods are also experienced and brought out clearly by you. I congratulate you for your blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much dad! Your homeopathy prescriptions helped with the weakness. I need to add a note about rustox as well.
DeleteNeha, glad to hear about your recovery, thanks for sharing. May god blesss all of you. All the best for future.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Bhaiya!!
DeleteNeha a wonderful insight on this stubborn disease. We have seen you going through such tough time and combating the disease with many tried and tested remedies and some worked and some didn't, and come to realise that you have won the battle yourself with rest and some fantastic home remedies. You are so right is saying that the immune system has to be strong enough to ward off typhoid. Now seeing you eat a normal meal after so many months is a major relief to all of us nonetheless you are looking in the pink of health after nearly a year. God bless you with just Good health for the moment!😊
ReplyDeleteThank you Bhabhi. It feels great to be back to normal. I remember how difficult it was for me to even stand up straight when we were doing the family picture shoot in January. Can't believe now I am running on my feet all day through. We need to do the family pic again though, to include the pinker side of me :)

ReplyDeleteI got typhoid during April-May 2015 and then again in May-June 2015. The fever went away last week. I was telling about this relapse to my office friend and she gave me this link.
ReplyDeleteI must say this is an excellent read. Every thing is as it goes in typhoid.
I did not take care about diet after the initial typhoid attack and it relapsed with in a month.
Diet is paramount. The explanation provided in this link is true.
Allopathic doctors do not give you this information about diet.
The information about role that immunity plays in typhoid occurrence and then in recovering from it is very useful.
I did not find all this information anywhere else.
A great article indeed!!
Thanks for sharing your experience Bhavani. Continue to take care of your health and watch out for any signs of weakness for a month or more. It takes a while to flush out the bacteria from the system and one must be very careful to not let it attack and overtake the weakened body. I found pranayam immensely helpful in getting back the strength to fight the recurring attacks. Honey&Cinnamon and Neem are also my favorites.

DeleteI have fever only in evening and ESR range is 78 which is very high.I have lost 5 kgs till now but still blood test is Negative. I don't get headache or stomach pain but Dr. still says that its a possibilty of typhoid.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone guide me.
Here is my experience. I am a new resident of an endemic typhoid area in india. I am an athlete. One day in march i felt a bout of dizziness when walking. I was on a low glycemic diet due to DM. I attributed it to me getting used to low sugars. But within a day i felt nausea and bloating. The doc gave me a antibiotic presuming gut infection. It subsided, but my energy levels were still low and i found exercise and recovery and even walking to be a dizzy act. My EKG everything was normal. I attributed it to my poor diet. A week later i had an outside food and the next day it was diarrhea. I took a cipro and it got over. But within two days i was panicky and nauseaus. The doc gives me some antibiotics and i am normal. Again after stopping the antibiotics i am dizzy and nauseus and no fever. I go back on the antibiotics and try exercising again, and i find it an ordeal. Coincidentlaly my wife and son face the same sequence of events and i put them on the antibiotic. The nausea goes down, but after two days of stopping the antibiotic, we feel very infected and wanna get hospitalised. I contact my pathologist friend who suggests it might be a viral gastritis. I contact another doc friend who has a lab, and he tells me to go for a widel test. I do it and it comes out as mild dilution for all categories of typhoid like 1/40 and 1/80.
ReplyDeleteThe docs in India order a useless test called typhidot, which is very unreliable, all of us negative in that. But the widel and the symptoms were very clear for typhoid. The doc doesnt accept the diagnosis. He is stupid not to analyse that since i was on a antibiotic course we had very low dilutions. Had i waited for sometime before doing the widel, dilutions would have been higher.
I tell the doc to put me and my family on a course of broad spectrum antibiotics, he does so. The infectious symptoms go down.
Another stuff is that when you are careless about the diet, the symptoms fulminate. As of today i have gone on a complete bland diet of rice gruel etc.
Only thing that baffles me is me and my wife have dizziness walking, heaviness in the head, if we carry loads we feel dizzy. We are worn out. Lying down and sitting is ok. Household activities too leave us very tired. In other forums i have seen lots of patients mention the same. Just to mention, we are both athletic and active, and it is for the past one week that we are facing these symptoms.
Could you let me know how long it took you to recover from these spells. Thanks.
Looking for reasons for low grade fever in the evenings, I just happened to bumped into my own blog that I last visited a long time ago. Since yours is the latest comment, I suppose you're still looking for an answer. Hope this helps. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
DeleteIt took me a long time, like 8 months, to get back the lost energy&strength but I'm very sure that it was because I delayed taking care of myself to as long as 3 months into the illness. Take care of yourself and your wife. Pamper yourself with lots of rest and supplements for atleast a 1 month. Some quick notes -
Vitamin supplements and Vitamins B12 shots - to help body get the daily dose from supplements, as absorption is severely impacted during typhoid ( the bacterial destroys the intestinal lining). B12 helps getting back the lost strength.
Pre&Pro biotics - again, to aid digestion and get all the goodness these good bacteria have to offer
Diet - I've captured this on the diet page in the blog. It's needed to be followed for a month.
Honey+Cinnamon - This is magical, as I've called out in the remedies page.
Just a note - do get a blood work done to check for stuff before starting the supplements. Check for iron, HB, counts, B12 etc. The levels would have dropped significantly if the illness has been there for some time.
DeleteAlso get LFT done, it helps to know if liver is compromised, and then the docs give meds to settle the liver.
Regarding tests - SRL labs are very accurate in the results. If you have one near you, repeat your widal - it should be high - greater than 1:80. The reports come in a day if results are negative and take 2 days if it's a positive widal
Hi neha thanks for the reply. I finished my one week of antibiotic on 4th of april. i went back on a normal diet without oily stuff. I had an immediate mild relapse within two days, now i am on a fortnight of antibiotics and bland diet. My wife and son dont have any relapses. Walking around the house and doing the chores is what i have energy for. From walking 3 kms to just strolling a few blocks is what we have been reduced to. What i find is in chennai the typhoid fever is treated within three days by docs and i used to resume office and normal diet on the fourth. In darjeeling where i stay, the bug lingers on and is very stubborn.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Neha..Am Fed up with repeated Typhoid...your blog is giving me strength to fight against this deadly disease.
ReplyDeletehello neha dee my self rajat thakur and i am 17½ years old. dont know from where i should start. actually first time i was infected with typhoid 2 years ago (2014)in the month of august of the ratio 1:160,1:180, and i take some pills for 7 days prescribed by doctor and after some time i felt little well and there was no relapse for one year. After that again in 2015 in month of august i felt very weakness ,pains near backbone and yeah my legs oh my god i was not able to walk even for 500m but my body temperature was 96-97°F. Then i go for widal tests and in reports it was come of 1:160,1:180 again this time my doctor prescribed me injections for 5 days with some pills and vitamin tonic then after that course i felt very weak but after 3 months i recover it. now in 15 july 2016 i had again suffered from some symptoms like loss of apitite, very weakness, loss of 1 kg, severe pains in legs and in back but fever is 96-97°F,hairfall and also there is constipation. this time i go for many tests all was normal but this time typhoid was of 1:320 .Now my docter again prescribed me injection for 2 times a day for 6 days with some pills,I AM VERY SCARED THAT I THINK IT WILL COME AGAIN IN NEXT YEAR OR AFTER SOME TIME..This is a very big problem for me i am of very little age going through very stressfull life.. please sister help me how can i handle with it that it will not come again.. please help me please....
ReplyDeleteHi Rajat, I've gone through this myself. My suggestion is to start doing Yoga, it helps heal the gut to a great extent. following are helpful aswell:
Delete1. Take Typhoid vaccine, it protects (for 2-3 years) from a new typhoid infection. In India, Typhoid is prevalent and it is very likely that we end up ingesting some contaminated food/water that's infected with Typhoid. Note that the Vaccine will not help clear the existing strains of the bacteria in the body (that stay in the gut for a long time) that cause the reoccurrence most of the times.
2. Whenever you see the symptoms reoccurring(decreased appetite, nausea, changes in stool patterns etc), increase the intake of probacteria (resort to curd, or the capsules that come in the market) for 1-2 months.
3. When the bacteria is active, the absorption of nutrients in the body is decreased, so in a few weeks, we start to see weakness, hairfall etc. To overcome this, Vitamin supplements are helpful. Taking B12 injection, in particular helped me. Check with your doctor on what supplements to take.
Thank you for sharing it, its really inforamtive even doctors did not tell me in such manner...
ReplyDeleteHello neha ji
ReplyDeleteI have been suffering from typhoid fever since last 7 years.I have tried many allopthatic medicine but did not get relief.I have consulted at CMC vellore , aiims , ilbs new Delhi , pgi Lucknow , kgmc Lucknow... Etc
All reports are normal like , ct scan , MRI whole abdomen , endoscopy , colonscopy ,chest x ray , ultrasound. But I was diagnosed of h.pylori.after taking medicine for h.pylori I got cured of it.
I also had deficiency of vitamin b12 , b9 , calcium but got cured of it.
But widal is always positive
S.typhi o 1/160
S.typhi h 1/160
S paratyphi - negative
ESR - 45
My present symptoms
Loss of appetite
Thick white coated tongue
Feverish feeling but not documented in thermometer
Smell of food makes me feel I'll
Insomnia especially at night
I barely eat one chapati
Most of the doctors do not consider that I am having typhoid fever and also says that widal is not authentic report and it will remain positive entire my whole life
Hello, please don't worry. My Widal and ESR also remain high to date, after over 2 years from the time I was first diagnosed of Typhoid. I haven’t done it in the last six months though, and I don’t feel the need to do it (likely because the feeling from within is great, I’m able to do more work than ever before and I just never get tired). There would likely be some sort of inflammation in the body that causes this. My advice would be to not worry about these numbers, what is important is that the energy levels are high, there's absolutely no weakness and you feel great all the time. Yoga really helps get the body and mind back to normal. I believe that the flow of oxygen over the various parts of the body during yoga poses heals and strengthens them. Yoga helps assimilate all the energy within and then channels it across all parts of the body.
DeleteAs I mentioned in the blog, I started with pranayama (Anulom Vilom) to help me build the strength to do daily chores. Once I had the strength to be able to do the bare minimum, I started doing Surya Namaskar. Initially I did 5 sets (in 5 minutes), then moved to 10, and now I do 12 sets ( in 40 minutes). I've been doing it regularly. Not only does it help build the strength, it also helps bring back the much needed peach and calm in the mind. I also observed that it made me smarter and more skillful than ever. So please give it a try. Once you start seeing the benefits, it’s very addictive and the more you do it regularly, the better it gets. I didn’t not have any back or knee problems, so I observed the online videos and followed the same. You can also go to a Yoga trainer and learn how to do it. Getting the breathing right and doing the postures right is very important.
Here's a link to an independent study done on Surya Namaskar that highlights the increased muscular strength, stamina and overall fitness in individuals that participated in the study.

Hi Neha
ReplyDelete17 days back i started showing symptoms of typhoid, a week later it was diagnosed
my ratio is 1:320 after taking antibiotics just for a day my fever subsided, i have been on a bland diet since but have now started taking small amount of chapatti. I still have a little stomach ache not much, and i am still on antibiotics but a lighter dose (earlier i was taking 500 + 400 mg for 3 days now i am taking just 200 mg for 10 days) What bothers me is will my typhoid relapse? and what diet should i follow
Thanks in advance
I have come across many individuals that did not have a typhoid relapse, these were majorly people who had the regular typhoid attacks - that surfaced as acute symptoms and subsided in a week and the recovery happened in 14-21 days. Chronic typhoid, although milder, tends to reoccur multiple times.

ReplyDeleteHello Neha, this blog is a life saver. I got typhoid in Indonesia 6 weeks ago, and have since returned to Australia were I reside.
ReplyDeleteAll blood work shows that the typhoid is no longer present, however I still feel unwell. I am quick to get tired, my face flushes of an evening, and I have a non-descriptive red rash on my arm that also gets worse of an evening, although it is not the typical rash of typhoid fever (rose spots). Does this sound like a common occurrence?
Kindest regards, J
Hi Jessie, what does your ESR look like? In my case, the ESR remained over 20 until I fully recovered. If you have lethargy and weakness, my guess is that the bacteria is still in the system.
DeleteHi Neha, thank you for sharing your experience and helping others overcome this menace. I was diagnosed with typhoid last week and since then I am on antibiotics. I have started taking some solid foods from last 2 days. I am eating home cooked food wich has very little oil. Please advise if this is ok or I should eat food which is totally oil free.
ReplyDeleteHi DJ, home cooked food is the safest. Avoid oil and spices.

ReplyDeleteHi Neha, Thank you for this.
ReplyDeleteI am diagnosed with typhoid in October. been through medication and later report said Negative. But I am depressed always and negative thinking after and during this fever.
Lost complete peace of mind.
If you are physically fit, please include yoga in your exceeded routine. Most times, the typhoid tests show borderline values 1:80, but typhoid is active. Get your ESR checked to get the levels of infection in the body.

ReplyDeleteHi Gaurav, sorry for your condition, hope you get back to normal soon. I believe you will recover in two to three months if you practice pranayam and yoga every day and take two tea spoons of turmeric mixed in hot water at bedtime or the first thing in the morning. Turmeric will heal the affected areas in the interstine that have been damaged due to the long running typhoid. Yoga (surya namaskar being the most effective) will help strengthen the body and calm the mind aswell. I have tried both myself and surya namaskar is something I have been doing everyday, for the last 2 years. Good luck for your recovery.
